Red Dog Howls Premieres On 9/5

Red Dog Howls, a play about the Armenian genocide and the terrible atrocities inflicted by the Turks on the Armenian population, is set to debut in New York .

The play is about a box of old letters and a father’s dying wish that lead Michael Kiriakos to dig up the buried secrets of his family history. After a series of mysterious encounters with Rose, a captivating elderly Armenian woman, Michael eventually uncovers a past he never knew existed – one of exile, sacrifice and ultimately redemption.

Written by Alexander Dinelaris and directed by Ken Rus Schmoll, Red Dog Howls explores the horror of a forgotten genocide, the enduring strength of the human spirit and how the choices we make for our children will – for better or worse – reverberate for generations to come.

The Turkish community in the U.S. has reacted angrily to the play, with Ali Çınar, head of the Turkish American Association repeating the Turkish government’s tired lies and denial of the Armenian genocide.

Tony nominee Kathleen Chalfant will lead the cast of Red Dog Howls at the New York Theatre Workshop.  Chalfant received a Tony nomination for Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and won multiple awards for creating the role of Vivian Bearing in Margaret Edson’s Wit. Her other off-Broadway credits include Talking Heads, Family Week, Dead Man’s Cell Phoneand Spalding Gray: Stories Left to Tell.
